Ancient Oak and the Mosa

Set in 500 BC, this piece captures the wild, sacred landscape of the Mosa (Moselle) Valley as seen through the eyes of Nemed, the young protagonist of The Severed Root. Perched high on the hillside, Nemed gazes upon a monumental oak tree—a beacon of ancient wisdom standing at the edge of the river long before the ground would become the historic site of St. Mary of the Martyrs.

Layered with expressive, painterly strokes of ochre, teal, and deep midnight blues, the composition bridges the physical landscape with a sense of unseen spiritual force. The heavy impasto work and dramatic contrast between the illuminated canopy and stormy sky reflect a time when the ancient forests held sacred memory, capturing a fleeting moment of quiet wonder before history unfolded.
